Why a Multipoint Inspection is Important

Drivers want their cars to be reliable, and that takes some maintenance. A multipoint inspection acts as a comprehensive evaluation of a vehicle, searching high and low for potential issues that you might not even be aware of. A multipoint inspection examines parts such as steering, braking, tires, fluids, gears, and more, allowing you to fix minor problems before they develop into major ones.

When You Should Get a Multipoint Inspection

While there is no bad time to get a multipoint inspection, most experts advise you to get one every few years. Check your Owner's Manual for specific recommendations from your vehicle manufacturer. You should also consider getting one before you buy a new vehicle, before you sell your vehicle, before long road trips, and at season's change.

The Multipoint Inspection Process

Step 1

First, a technician will check under the hood. This will include examining the motor oil and filter, coolant, brake fluid, brake lines, power steering fluid, cabin air filter, drive belts, hoses, battery, windshield washer fluid, and more.

Step 2

Next, the technician will examine the inside, outside, and safety equipment. This includes lights, windshield wiper blades, floor mats, AC, seat belts, airbags, horns, brakes, and more.

Step 3

Then, the technician will check the drivetrain and suspension, including engine performance, transmission, clutch, differential and transfer case, driveshaft, U-joints, CV joints, exhaust system, shocks, struts, springs, ball joints and bushings, tire alignment, tires, and more.

Step 4

Once the technician has thoroughly examined all parts of the vehicle and documented each component, they will explain the components and what might need to be repaired or replaced. Most inspections will even rate each component on a color or number scale to let you know how urgent a repair or replacement is.

Cost of a Multipoint Inspection

The more in-depth the multipoint inspection, the more it will cost. While some are free, you can pay upwards of $200 for one, depending on the diagnostic services you choose. Questions to Ask Your Service Technician

  • What needs to be repaired or replaced immediately?

  • For the items that don't need immediate repair, how long do I have before they need to be repaired or replaced?

  • How much would it cost to get the necessary repairs that the inspection has discovered?

Signs of a Quality Multipoint Inspection

  • Detailed diagnostics should be complete.

  • You should know what components need to be repaired soon or immediately.

Caring for Your Vehicle After a Multipoint Inspection

A multipoint inspection usually only identifies current or potential problems. It doesn't fix them. You will want to utilize the inspection to determine the next steps to correct any potential problems.
