Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs Porsche Macan

South Carolina drivers looking to stand out on the roads of Greenville often choose to purchase European luxury vehicles. However, despite the strong reputations of many European luxury brands, the market is surprisingly full of compromises. The most famous and distinctive European luxury vehicles are often extremely pricey and hard to obtain. And drivers looking for a more accessible option will often end up with anodyne vehicles showing little to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Yet one brand resists this temptation to polarization. One brand offers Spartanburg drivers the perfect mix of everyday accessibility and exceptional performance. That brand is Alfa Romeo.

At Benson Alfa Romeo, we believe that our vehicles are the perfect solution to the compromise-heavy European luxury lineup. The Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover use their holistic, unique design architecture and their passion for hot-blooded Italian performance to stand above their more staid German rivals. Yet unlike the most famous million-dollar supercars, Alfa Romeo models are surprisingly accessible for the average luxury buyer. To demonstrate, we compare Alfa Romeo's Stelvio to the more well-known Porsche Macan crossover. How does the Stelvio stack up to the Macan, and by extension the rest of the European luxury SUV field?

Stelvio vs Macan - Performance

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio gets around with a two-liter inline-four engine producing 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. Yet the gem of the lineup is Alfa's Quadrifoglio model. Using an engine developed in Ferrari labs, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio produces 505 horsepower, 443 pound-feet of torque and a 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds.

The Macan offers three different engine options to the Stelvio's two. Yet both the base and the top-line version are less powerful than their equivalents in the Alfa lineup. The standard 2-liter 4-cylinder option makes 261 horsepower, while the strongest model uses a V6 configuration and makes 434 horsepower. A 375-horsepower V6 is also available.

Of course, the top-performing luxury SUVs rely on more than just a powerful engine. With features such as almost perfectly split weight distribution and a standard carbon fiber driveshaft, the entire Stelvio is harmoniously designed for optimal performance. And no detail is overlooked on the Alfa Romeo, with elements such as the Stelvio's unique active aerodynamic front splitter contributing to the vehicle's overall driving character.

Stelvio vs Macan - Interior, Design & Features

True luxury vehicles are defined both by their driving performance and their level of interior opulence. Though the Porsche lineup has some distinctive interiors available, essential luxury features such as leather seating often require pricey upgrades. Alfa Romeo vehicles however, provide these elements as standard on even their lowest-level trims.

Alfa Romeo's generosity extends beyond leather seats. While the Macan provides a larger infotainment screen than the Stelvio does, Android Auto is not available on the Porsche. And while the Porsche lineup offers many advanced driver assists, Greenville shoppers desiring features such as automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control will only find them standard on the Stelvio.

Yet despite its higher-class cabin and more ambitious performance, the Stelvio is generally available at a lower price point than the Porsche. The base-model Sprint comes in at a suggested retail price that is almost $10,000 less than the Macan's standard trim. Even the Stelvio Veloce, the highest-level non-Quadrifoglio model, is more accessible than the base-level Porsche.

While the Porsche Macan may be the more famous European luxury crossover, that reputation is shallow when compared to vehicles such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The Stelvio has the performance features and design needed to be a true standout luxury vehicle. With stronger capabilities, higher-class interiors and more standard safety features, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers an authentic luxury experience with far fewer compromises than the Macan.
